Teach Sea Animals Names Using Sea Animal Flashcards with this free ESL Lesson Plan! Ocean animals is a fun and engaging ESL topic that young learners enjoy. Creating an ESL lesson plan that captures your student's attention doesn't have to be complicated. Lessons usually go better when things are kept simple. Below you will find an ESL ocean animal lesson plan example to inspire some ideas for your lesson.
Sea Animal Lesson Plan Example for Young ESL Learners
WARM-UP
Start the class by singing the Once I Caught A Fish Alive song. Remember to add TPR to each part of the song. You may need to sing it a few times before your students can sing along with you.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Once I caught a fish alive.
6, 7, 8, 9, 10, then I let it go again.
Why did you let it go?
Because it bit my finger so.
Which finger did it bite?
This little finger on my right!
STUDY
Next, we need to introduce the new vocabulary in a fun way that will capture our student's attention. We can do this by introducing some ESL flashcards for kids using a game called Bounce.
For this activity, all you will need are the Mooncake English Sea animal flashcards and a ball.
Place the flashcards facedown on the floor, counting as you do (rote counting practice).
Introduce the ball using chant and TPR. "It's a ball, roll, roll. It's a ball, roll, roll."
Choose a student that is sat nicely and roll them the ball. Have the class chants together, "roll, roll, roll" as you do.
Ask the student with the ball to stand up and drop the ball on one of the flashcards. To keep everyone involved, have the class chant together, "stand up, stand up, drop the ball."
Pick up the chosen flashcard and look at it with excitement. Have the class chant together, "let me see, please."
Show the flashcard and introduce the word using chant and TPR.
Repeat the process until you have introduced all the flashcards.
ACTIVATE
Next, we need to practice the new words we have learned. We can do this by playing a game of What's Missing.
Lay the ESL flashcards out on the floor one by one, reviewing each word with TPR as you do.
Ask the class to close their eyes, no peaking!
Remove one of the ESL flashcards and ask the class to open their eyes.
Ask students "what's missing" and see if they can name the sea creature that has gone missing.
Repeat the process until you have practiced all the new words.
If the class is struggling to understand the game at first, don't be discouraged. It can take a few attempts for students to know how to play. Where needed, use an assistant teacher as a demo student to help demonstrate how to play.
DISMISSAL
Dismiss students one by one by asking them their favorite sea animal. Once they reply using a target sentence or word, give them an ocean animal coloring sheet to complete.
As students are coloring, remember to review colors and other previously taught language in context.
Inlude other incidental language such as, what color do you like? Pass the (red) crayon please, etc.
TIPS!
When first introducing the topic, limit the number of new vocabulary to 3 or 4 words. Introducing too many new words at once can be difficult for students to learn.
When introducing the new ocean animal vocabulary, use the Slippery Fish song's tune and sing acapella. Adding chant and rhythm to a word also helps students remember new words.
If teaching particularly young learners, remember to speak slowly and add TPR to everything you do.
